About Comenius University:

 

Comenius University Faculty of Medicine founded in 1919 is one of the oldest and most prestigious faculties of the Comenius University. It was the first Faculty of Medicine in Slovakia. Comenius University from 1919 carries the name of the famous pedagogue and philosopher, Jan Amos Comenius (Komensky). Since 1993 university launched both programmes (Medicine and Dentistry) in English, focused primarily on international students. Currently the school offers two main study programmes: General Medicine and Dentistry, both are 6 year day - time doctoral studies in Slovak or in English language.

 

About the course:

 

Currently the Comenius University Faculty of Medicine offers two main undergraduate study programmes: General Medicine and Dentistry both in 6 year day-time doctoral study in Slovak or in English languages. No external undergraduate doctoral programmes are offered.

The standard course of study lasts six years (12 semesters). Each academic year starts in September and lasts till the end of August of the following year. The academic year is divided into two semesters, winter semester (spread over September till February) and summer semester (spread over February till August).

After passing the state examination the graduate is conferred the degree MUDr. - Medicinae universae doctor (Doctor of Medicine) and MDDr. – Medicinae Dentale Doctor (Doctor of Dentistry) respectively.

Since the academic year 2001/2002 the credit system has been introduced that is compatible with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

First to third year’s courses provide theoretical and pre-clinical lectures, labs and practical classes, the remainder of the fourth and sixth years include diverse clinical experiences.

 

Entrance examination and addmission process:

 

Qualified graduates of established High School or Colleges are eligible for taking Entrance Examination to the first year of the medical study at Comenius University Faculty of Medicine.

The test is in the written form in English language and consists 100 questions from Biology and 100 questions from Chemistry. Test questions will be chosen randomly by the computer and the set of questions (in the envelope) will be distributed randomly to the applicants. The examination answer sheet will be scaned and evaluated by the computer at CUFM avoiding any personal interference during evaluation. We would like to remind you that the acceptance to the studies at Comenius University Faculty of Medicine is conditioned by successful passing of the entrance examinations.

The revision booklet for the applicants of General Medicine and Dentistry studies at Comenius University Faculty of Medicine in Bratislava contains 500 biology example questions and the 500 chemistry example questions that are recommended to revise for meeting the Entrance Examination requirements.

 

Needed documents for registration for entrance examination:

 

1) Photocopy of the applicant´s passport (first page only).

2) ​High School Certificate. The school report should include all grades obtained during your studies. High school certificates must be apostalized (applicants will receive further instructions once the registration process has been initiated),

3) Birth Certificate, 
4) Certificate of Vaccination Against Hepatitis B. In accordance with the regulations of the Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University, Bratislava, regarding health safety and protection (Article 38-2), students must undergo obligatory vaccination against Hepatitis B. (first page only),

About Charles University:

 

The oldest university in central Europe, the Charles University was founded on April 7, 1348 by Charles IV, the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia.

From its foundation it was devoted to studia generalia and the emperor endowed it with all the privileges enjoyed by older European universities. In accordance with medieval conceptions of the academic range of a complete university, the newly established university had four faculties - Theology, Law, Medicine and Arts.

Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Kralove started its educational activities on November 25, 1945 as the first university faculty in East Bohemia. Initially, the Hradec Kralove faculty was established as a part of the Prague Faculty of Medicine. Due to their co-operation and assistance it was immediately possible to establish both a high quality teaching staff and an effective departmental structure in Hradec Kralove. The first post-war Czechoslovak president, Dr. Edvard Benes, confirmed this successful development during his visit in 1946. Because of the "Cold War", the faculty was transformed into a Military Medical Academy for a short time. However, in September 1958, the Faculty returned back to Charles University. For its entire 57 years of existence, the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Kralove has been among the top Czech university institutions.

 

About the course:

 

Medical degree study program in Dentistry is arranged along the lines of theoretical, pre-clinical and clinical studies in theoretical and pre-clinical departments, clinical departments and institutes. The clinical instruction takes place in the Faculty Hospital – a complex of 37 clinics and departments with 1500 beds and a staff of 4000 doctors and nurses.

Since 1992 the Faculty has organised medical degree study programs in the English language (361 students studying in the academic year 2013/2014). All classes in both theoretical and clinical studies are taught in English, however, Czech language classes are an obligatory part of the curriculum during the first and the second year of study in order to prepare the students for communication with patients in their clinical lessons. The curricula of Czech and English courses are entirely parallel and fully comparable with the current international standard. They are accredited by EU.

 

Entrance examination and addmission process:

 

Students who have completed secondary school education are considered eligible for medical degree study programs in Dentistry.

Entrance examination (held in English) is based on:

written testing (multiple choice) of the applicant´s knowledge of basic science in

  • Chemistry (25 questions)

  • Biology (25 questions)

  • Physics or Mathematics (10 questions)(alternatives, according to individual preference)

written test duration is 2 hours and 30 minut

  • short oral interview oriented towards personality and motivation of the applicant

Utilities for the examination:

  • IT IS NOT ALLOWED to use any dictionary or tables

  • ONLY A CALCULATOR is needed

About Pavol Jozef Šafarik University:

 

The university is located in the second largest town in Slovakia. Košice with its rich history offers many cultural and sport evens and activities for multicultural student community. The Faculty of Medicine was established in 1948 as a branch of the Faculty of Medicine of the Slovak University, later called Comenius University in Bratislava. Then in 1959, the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Philosophy merged, which led to the foundation of a new university in Eastern Slovakia, called Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice. The Faculty of Medicine at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice closely co-operates with many significant universities and institutions in: Prague, Paris, Nantes, Bordeaux, Padova, Essen, Giessen, Düsseldorf, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Zürich, Turku, Oulu, Salamanca, Krakow and others. About the course:

 

The English program is 15 years old, and over 600 international students have successfully completed their studies and earned a degree in the field of General medicine or Dentistry. The Faculty of Medicine provides university study for international students in two medical branches:
General Medicine - the course lasts 6 years (12 terms)
Dental Medicine   - the course lasts 6 years (12 terms)

 

Both - General Medicine and Dental Medicine - are available for international students with a good command of English. The Faculty of Medicine is closely connected with the Teaching Hospital in Košice, in which practical education in clinical disciplines is carried out.

The last years of study are concerned with practical training in hospitals and health care institutes. The study is completed by the state examinations before the Board of the Faculty Experts. Graduates are awarded the academic title "Doctor of General Medicine", abbreviated “MUDr.” (equivalent to M.D. degree) and “Doctor of Dental Medicine”, abbreviated “MDDr.” (equivalent to D.M.D.).

In those professions where the conditions of education in Slovakia are identical with those in the European Union, which have already been recognized (medical and dental doctors), the member states of the European Union are obliged to accept the diplomas issued in Slovakia, irrespective of the language of instruction.

 

Entrance examination and addmission process:

 

The applicants must satisfactorily pass the entrance examination in Chemistry and Biology in written form (multiple choices tests). Since the language of instruction is English, applicants should possess good command of English as well. An entrance examination test consists of 100 questions in Biology and 100 questions in Chemistry. The applicants have 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete the test.
